Could A Decline In Tech Regulations Affect Your Digital Agency?

Tech Regulations

Globital NZ works alongside digital agencies that outsource digital marketing services for their clients. It’s important for anyone working in the marketing space to understand the impact of technology and, specifically, regulations of the technological world can have on their clients and marketing campaigns.

Is Support For Government Regulations In Technology Declining?

According to the Pew Research Center in Washington, DC, the number of American adults who are in favour of the government having a hand in regulating technology and technology companies is steadily declining. According to a study done by Pew, 56% of surveyed adults were in favour of major technology companies being increasingly regulated by the government.

In 2022, the same opinion was held by only 44% of surveyed results, a 12% decline. On the other side of the coin, the number of surveyed adults who reported wanting fewer government regulations for technology companies doubled from 2021 to 2022. It’s clear: fewer Americans are in favour of the government interfering in the technological landscape, and it’s reasonable to assume that those feelings are shared by people in other regions.

Join Our Facebook Group And Stay Informed!

In the ever-changing digital marketing world, staying up-to-date with the regulation shifts can prove tricky. That’s why we created the DACC, a Facebook group for agency owners to connect with like-minded professionals worldwide. Whether you have questions, want to share insights, gain knowledge, or access valuable resources, our community is the perfect place to stay informed and connected.

What Is Causing The Shift In Opinion?

The exact cause for the change in opinion is not known, but there has been some speculation. The Pew Research Center suggests that the shift could be linked to the number of American adults who believe that social media platforms are likely to censor content they personally find objectionable (if they haven’t done so already). According to the same study, a strong majority (77%) held this opinion. If nearly three-quarters of the population believe they are at risk of being censored, it’s not surprising that they would push back against any authority or organisation likely to restrict their right to speak.

Could These Changes Affect Digital Agencies?

If there is less government regulation posed upon technology companies, they will keep control (or gain it) over their policies and guidelines. With freedom over their own policies, technology companies would be free to enact rules that could affect digital agencies. For instance, Google has been implementing policies to protect their users’ experiences and privacy with the following effects:

  • Removal of third-party cookies
  • Limiting ad targeting
  • Initial ad targeting is broader
  • Privacy of Google Ads Search Terms

How To Move Forward

For digital agencies looking to the future, the first step is understanding how those changes could affect their clients. Following this, it’s important to communicate the potential effects and impacts policy changes could have on clients to manage their expectations.

Digital agencies should keep an eye out for any changes or updates to guidelines and regulations set by social media platforms and be sure to audit their clients’ marketing strategies, making any necessary adjustments.
